"This is the language of deliberate cruelty. When officials boast about placing human beings in conditions surrounded by dangerous predators, when they joke about teaching people to flee from alligators, they are not describing a detention facility; they are describing a torture chamber designed to terrorize."

And now the Rs passed their budget supercharging ICE. It's going to be extremely ugly with all the funding they just received. I am currently reading The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt about the evolution of moral frameworks (it explains how humans evolved moral concepts and which are prominent in liberal messaging vs. in conservative messaging). The conservative messaging about immigrants that you describe in your article definitely makes the immigrants a "profane" out-group and is designed to trigger disgust so that we tolerate this cruelty. I have been listening to you for a long time now and I was struck by how you have long said Dems need to use optimistic religious/traditional/patriotic messages in authentic ways to connect with voters who are generally at least a little to the right of their base politically. Haidt's book gives an answer from an evolutionary psychology perspective as to why those moral appeals would work if the Dems could do it. If their goal is to dehumanize immigrants and to make them inhuman, how do we pierce through the right-wing media bubble with the truth? How do we activate compassion in the average American?

was it cruel when 20 million came in illegally? I’d say so.

I have questions Mike. Is all of this immigration terrorism and cruelty making an impression on those that voted for Trumpism? What are Cubans thinking now? I've heard it said from followers on Bluesky that the 'Pro'-Palestinians are doubling down on their vote against Harris. It just isn't logical. Maybe I don't understand .......... Thanks for letting me comment.

Our nation has never reconciled itself from our Civil War. Insurrectionists have national power over our institutions. When and where will a Fort Sumter situation occur?

Very powerful writing, Mike, we've normalized atrocity so much that it takes pieces like this to remind us of what's really going on. In practice, my guess is that this camp will be filled with Haitians and Venezuelans who have just had their TPS revoked, that is, people here legally until yesterday, with no criminal records. NYT today and LAT continue to document the fear in LA. How does this end?

I’m guessing they’ll start flying people from all over the country to these detention camps so the mix of people will be from all over. Allows the feds to give Red States money.

I shudder to think how it ends but all I know is the longer it goes on the worse it’s likely to unfold

There are four varieties of sadism, according to Theodore Millon, a prominent and well respected psychologist. They are: Spineless Sadists, who seek out powerless victims/scapegoats to inflict pain upon, largely because they themselves feel insecure; the Tyrannical Sadists, who are verbally cutting and destructive, intentionally surly, abusive and inhumane, largely to force submission; Enforcing Sadists (often found in police uniform), who act out their internalized hostilities under the guise of maintaining order, and Explosive sadists, who experience explosive rages and outbursts of fury and aggression. Sadism as a personality trait is strongly correlated with narcissistic personality and psychopathy. Now. Just who does this bring to mind among the faces now so commonly seen in the news?

As a Florida native, I’m not surprised that DeSantis and his minions created this Alligator Alcratraz and are merchandising it. A hurricane hasn’t struck south Florida in years. It will be this year. A tent city in a hurricane with no NOAA forecast or FEMA assistance.

We need a Frank Capra type of response. When confronted with Germany propaganda, he said he could do any better. His solution use the German propaganda itself to expose the Nazis.

As much as I am alarmed by the very real dangers of an AI "arms race" unleashing mis-aligned (with human goals) AGI and ASI agents, it is getting harder and harder to argue that we would be worse off if AI takes over the world.
