See it. Name it. And answer with solidarity with creative solutions. I am exceptionally proud that the PM that decided to call this out and work toward answers is our northern neighbor. This gives me hope. I think that among the creative solutions will be coalitions emerging that depend less on nation states and more upon shared ideals. Such an excellent essay and explainer, Mike. Thank you!

Hopefully sometime in the near future the US can become a part of those solution rather than an obstacle. Once it pulls itself together that is.

Right? I feel like the teacher who is secretly relieved when the parents start disciplining her student.

It would take a decade or longer to begin to rebuild trust in America.

Anericans don't trust one another, ir our government (on borh sides of the aisle).

Our democracy is being decapitated in broad daylight.

Before his term ends, Trump is likely to precipitate an economic collapse.

I hope that the EU actually acts on Carney's words, but their track record isn't encouraging.

I agree- the damage is immense. Trust is shattered. So much diplomacy down the drain. Also, I saw that the EU actually reopened the door for negotiations after Trump backed off the military option with Greenland. Instead of just taking the W and ending the discussion for the time being they coddled him again. I hope the rest of the world can find the courage to call a spade a spade and start reimagining the future without America as the hegemon.

Mexico elects a President that is also a scientist, Canada elects a PM with a PhD in economics, the US elects a morally bankrupt, adjudicated rapist. After the PMs speech, Airforce One develops a "minor electrical" issue- if you've ever flown, you will realize there is no such thing as a minor electrical issue at 30,000ft. One year down, three to go. Actually, I feel better about our chances than I did a year ago. The emperor has no clothes. Thank you Mike.

Well written observation. "The times, they are a' Changin'"...we can no longer claim to be "the leader of the free world".

We couldn't have asked for a better leader to get us (the world) out of this mess caused by little dick and his dickless followers. Carney spoke carefully and audaciously there cannot be any ambiguity in his words. If America can't keep up with the world then they can go bankrupt with their conman in the White House. He'll come out with shed loads of money I'm sure as that's the only reason he wanted power in the first place. MAGA you've been conned regret it at your leisure.

This piece to me raises an important question: wouldn't you say that a world order were the middle powers have more of a say is more desirable than one where a sole superpower decides everything? Isn't that what we would call a more fair world, one where diplomacy reigns instead of the rule of might?

Mike Madrid's avatar

It could…or you could argue that’s how World War I and World War II started

Giglio Val's avatar

It could also be argued that those are what happens when too many great power have too much power to push others around. What happens if those middle powers like Serbia and Poland have more of a say in the world than being at the whims of great powers?

Still, I get your point.

Mike Madrid's avatar

Yes I think that’s what’s likely in a multipolar world. I think it’s far more dangerous and unstable- especially in the age of nuclear weapons

J AZ's avatar

Yes, specifically with proliferation coming because several 2nd-tier nations have the technological expertise but haven't done so since they felt protected within the Old Order (b. 1945, d. 2026) Japan, Germany, Canada, Poland... obviously the 1st two have some cultural-historical issues to grapple with but each of these industrial nations have to worry about their proximity to a hungry, potentially dangerous nearby neighbor looking at them & salivating

I'm will you! The stronger the middle becomes, the greater balance and fairness there will be. Carney is reclaiming SOVEREIGNTY for Canada, and encouraging other middle powers to do the same. The United States has been a greedy, immoral, lethal hegemon in its bullying. We who are world citizens yearning for peace and cooperation can transform the world. Trump did us a favor by exposing our rancid underbelly to the world. Now perhaps we have a real opportunity to embrace our ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity (aka DEI) if we come to grips with our genocidal, racist, misogynistic, egotistical, materialistic, colonial history and tendencies.

great piece, Mike. Thanks for writing it!

I was waiting for this to be said. I'm glad Carney finally said it. When will Americans begin to realize it?

As an American, I support Canada. Forever!!!

Too bad we won't now and maybe ever, be part of the new world order.
