Senator Padilla adds to my pride in being a "California immigrant." I was born in Ohio, have no claim to Latino or any other minority ancestry, and have no blood relatives that go back less than 4 generations in the US. My only claim to poverty is that of some of my best friends. Nevertheless, MAGA's and related manipulative lies have been clear to me for a long time, and I am now learning about mutual aid because I know more than ever that we're all in this together. I grieve for those who are now incarcerated for political reasons.
MAGA will eventually implode because it is ultimately self-destructive, but we need to work together to minimize harm and fix the structures that allowed MAGA's rise in the first place. MAGA is working hard to institutionalize its harms, so we need to work so much harder. But there are more of us than there are of them. Money isn't everything. That's why they're moving so quickly, because they know that when we kick them out, they won't be able to come back for a very long time, if ever.
I have zero Latino ancestry, but I suddenly found myself in tears from the beginning of this interview. This has been an incredibly painful time for any American who cares about our Constitution and all the things that made/make this country great...seeing so much of it dismantled and attacked has been like living in a nightmare (amplified by living in N. VA and working as a therapist in the area, so many of my clients connected to the federal govt). The flagrant evil this admin engages in in ICE abductions has been nausea-inducing to witness in the news. We live in an era where so many of us are longing for real leaders....thank you to both of you for being that. It's quite honestly a relief at this moment in time, hence, I suppose, the tears.
Senator Padilla makes me so proud to be an American. 🇺🇸
