Thank you for sharing insights into the CPAC strategy. The key takeaway from the recent shift in PEW numbers is that the Trump campaign effectively engaged Latino voters by investing time and effort in these communities. As your book points out, the Latino vote has evolved, shaped by generations who have redefined what it means to be a Latino voter. The minority of Latino voters who supported Donald Trump tended to be more educated and economically mobile, demonstrating a strong interest in economic messaging—something that Democrats have overlooked. While the CPAC message may have its shortcomings, their initiative to include the financial elite of the Latino community in discussions is noteworthy. Although the outcomes remain to be seen, their efforts to engage rather than expect participation is a positive step in understanding the reasons behind this demographic shift.

So we are basically inscrutable. 😁 It makes sense since our backgrounds are so different. Thanks for taking one for the team, Mike. Looking forward to your insights.

Considering they are rounding up Puerto Ricans and sending us to south sudan instead of back to Puerto Rico should have been the 1st sign

Why would Puerto Ricans be sent back to Puerto Rico? Why would they be sent anywhere at all? We don’t send people from Kentucky back to Kentucky.

There is some discussion on US citizens here:

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-deportation-dragnet-widens-catches-puerto-ricans-american-citizens

But a far more terrifying summary can be found here which discussed, among other things, the point where ICE blew up the door of a home filled with American citizens because of a fender-bender and beat others for daring to film kidnappings:

The Cuban business people may not be scared *yet* but increasingly it seems we all should be.

Now that is truly fascinating. I wonder if that's because that is a subject they feel they can't speak openly about because anything they have to say would run against the grain of the core MAGA message? It can't really be that they have no strong feelings about it ...

It is clear that Trump decides what is acceptable these days for Republicans and will turn on anyone who steps out of line. And ICE is very very close to his heart. So I suspect it is a case where the Republicans are afraid, and we all should be.

See some of the events described below:

Perhaps the Cuban diaspora has retained Spanish as a source of cultural pride because many came from monied backgrounds. The need to assimilate is not as high if you’ve already been culturally accepted / used to being accepted into the money class. I’ve seen this with Vietnamese refugees as well.

Probably should’ve pointed out that many Cuban refugees are lighter skinned. That also is a leg up in the acceptance sphere, allowing more room to be judged as “exotic” when having a language other than English rather than seeming to be base or “lowborn.”

Appreciate the way you gather this information and share it, without judgement. Makes it much more valuable. Are you familiar with Cec Heftel from Hawaii? I remember him saying back in the 80's that Spanish speaking media was the future of this country. I think he started what is now Univision?

I think Heftel may have seen this Great Transformation coming before you were born? Cec lived in San Diego in later life. I remember him when I read your work.

Cec Heftel served as US congressman from Hawaii’s 1st District from 1977 to 1986. (Reagan years.) He successfully bought and sold TV and Radio stations all over the country, starting in the 60s. In 1999, Heftel Broadcasting changed it’s name to Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation.

Heftel sold Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. to Univision Communications for $3.1 billion in 2003.
