So maybe we need to have the Feds issue, for free, National ID cards for us all. I’m sure the GOP will fall right in and support that 🤣

This is scary. We’ll have to sew pink triangles or star of Davids on our clothing next. A long time ago we almost didn’t get our young (not verbal yet) kids back across the border after visiting Canada from the U.S. because we didn’t have passports for them and Canada figured we might be stealing babies. We got started on the passport process for them as soon as we were back- get a passport for all family that you can! Another pro-tip- please make color copies of your passport and keep them in a couple of places, just in case the real one gets lost or taken.

The fact that the law makes it far too easy to disappear people, citizens and immigrants alike, without due process, is shocking. Shameful. Terrifying. A start to remedying this might have been the strong bi-partisan immigration bill Trump scuttled for political gain prior to the 2024 election — and Republicans capitulated to his demands.

I'm am Orthodox nun and our habits look very middle eastern. I guess I'll have to keep my birth certificate with me because that's all I have besides my picture ID amd Soc. Secrity card. I am so tired of the fascist nonsense! What's next?

All I can add is to make sure the certificate is official (raised stamp, seal or watermark, etc.), legible and not a photocopy.

It is pretty easy to “prove” you are a citizen if you are white and speak with an American accent. But it is a grave danger for everyone else.

Is there a distinction between a state driver’s license and a Real ID license? A notarized and recorded birth certificate had to be produced, as well as other proof of identity, in order to get the Real ID license.

Or, will ICE just dismiss anything, claiming it is “fake”, in order to meet their deportation quota?

I believe there is a recent case where an individual showed a Real ID to an agent but he threw it away stating it was probably fake. The individual was released and is planning to file legal action.

When the Constitution and the Fourth Amendment have become "optional", this is what we get.

Could I prove my citizenship? If I’m a member of some group that Trump doesn’t like (and there’s a LOT of those), nothing will ever be enough. But since I’m part of the one group that Trump actually does seem to like (old white guys), maybe I’m OK, at least as long as he doesn’t find out what I think of him and his fascist beliefs and actions.

Doubtful.

I’m a natural born American.

We aren’t (weren’t) a “papers, please” country. I don’t walk around with my birth certificate. I don’t have a passport. Does Star ID count as proof of citizenship? You’re not *supposed* to carry your SS card (it says so), & that’s not proof of citizenship. It’s just a number associated with an account where payroll taxes go. & you don’t have to be a citizen to pay payroll taxes.

I’d have better proof if I were a naturalized citizen. At least I’d have naturalization paperwork.

MAGA is relying on whites being safe & not needing proof of citizenship. But as we’re seeing, they aren’t.
