Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shakes hands with the Head of the Security Service (SSU) Vasyl Malyuk, who had reported on the operation against Russian airbases

There have been few images more somber about the role of America in the fight for freedom under Donald Trump than the image of President Volodymyr Zelensky departing the White House in February 2025. After being publicly berated by Donald Trump and JD Vance in an oval office ambush, the underdog leader of the Ukrainian cause crystallized the newfound weakness of his country's fight under an adversarial American administration. Trump’s parting shot on Truth Social that Zelensky “disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office” and could “come back when he is ready for Peace” suggested a leader with few options left. Yet yesterday’s unprecedented “Operation Spiderweb” a coordinated strike that hit 41 Russian aircraft across five regions, including strategic bombers in Siberia over 4,300 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, Zelensky pulled an Ace card. In fact the bold move by Ukrainian forces deep in Russian territory reveals that Zelensky possesses far more strategic cards than Trump assumed during their disastrous February confrontation.

This audacious operation targeted around 40 Russian military aircraft, most of them strategic bombers, across four airfields, including the Belaya air base in Russia's Irkutsk region, located over 4,000 kilometers from Ukraine's border. The strike bears a striking resemblance to legendary military operations that have shaped the struggle for freedom across centuries. Like Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle's B-25 bombers launching from the USS Hornet to strike Japan in 1942, or General Washington's crossing of the Delaware on Christmas night 1776, Operation Spiderweb demonstrates that nations fighting for their survival can achieve the seemingly impossible through courage, innovation, and the unbreakable commitment that comes only from defending one's homeland.
