Turning Point GOP: MAGA’s Collapse After Charlie Kirk's Death
Everything has been falling apart for the GOP since Charlie Kirk was killed. Why?
Let’s be precise about what Charlie Kirk’s death did and didn’t do.
It didn’t cause MAGA’s collapse. The cracks were already there. What his assassination did was remove the one person with the money, the network, and the institutional weight to keep those cracks from becoming canyons. When he died, nobody was minding the store. And what the looters found when they got inside tells you everything about what MAGA actually was.
A grift.
An enormous, sophisticated, well-funded grift with no ideological core.
The cracks that were already there. Kirk had spent the final year of his life walking an increasingly precarious tightrope about both the release of the Epstein files and over Israel and antisemitism. His Turning Point network was built substantially on pro-Israel Jewish donor money, and yet the MAGA base he was cultivating was being pulled in an uglier direction by the Tucker Carlson’s and Nick Fuentes’ of the online right. Kirk kept the peace through a combination of personal relationships, financial leverage, and sheer force of personality.
He could pick up the phone. He could cut someone off. He could offer a platform or revoke one. TPUSA was the mothership of content platforms for the online right. He understood that the coalition he was building contained genuinely incompatible elements, and he devoted enormous energy to managing that tension - as well as the charade.
He never resolved it. He just postponed it.
The antisemitism question was the fault line he couldn’t paper over. On one side, the older establishment conservative donors who wrote the checks and expected fealty to Israel. On the other, the young online base increasingly receptive to white nationalist grievance dressed up in nationalist language. Kirk tried to hold both, and watching him do it, you could literally see the strain on his face. It was the central unresolved contradiction of the movement he built, and he knew it. He struggled with it on-stage for the world to see. Trying to commit to the ‘free speech’ rhetoric he never believed in and the demands of high dollar donors that wanted the anti-Israel commentary shut down immediately.
When the bullet found Kirk in September, that contradiction lost its referee. What followed wasn’t a collapse from external pressure. It was an implosion, the structure caving inward because the load-bearing wall was gone.
Power abhors a vacuum and Charlie Kirk was the power. Make no mistake, Turning Point USA was not some organically built organization that Kirk built from scratch. This was an exceptionally well funded sophisticated communications operation deeply funded by donors with a political objective.
Saying Charlie Kirk “built” Turning Point USA is like saying Donald Trump “built” a real estate empire. They were both set up with many millions of dollars in assets and financial backing as they got started. Kirk didn’t start the organization with a simple social media account any more than Trump started with a fixer upper duplex.
Tucker Carlson, freed from Kirk’s gravitational pull, immediately invited white nationalist and Hitler enthusiast Nick Fuentes onto his podcast for a friendly two-hour conversation. The Heritage Foundation, the $100 million think tank that had plastered Trump’s face across its Capitol Hill building and declared its mission to be “institutionalizing Trumpism,” promptly exploded. Heritage president Kevin Roberts defended Carlson. Eighty-five percent of Heritage staff became, per a senior employee’s account to CNN, “totally disgusted.” Roberts’ own chief of staff resigned. Visiting fellows published resignation letters accusing the organization of enabling antisemitism. A major donor told CNN that Roberts’ continued leadership meant the end of half a million dollars in annual giving. By December, fifteen top Heritage executives had defected to Mike Pence’s rival operation.
William Buckley’s ambition of driving the crackpots, antisemites and kooks out of the conservative movement folded to the growing wave of each after years of Trumps flirtation and encouragement of their involvement.
The Turning Point USA conference in December, convened to memorialize Kirk, became a public brawl. Shapiro called Carlson’s Fuentes platforming “an act of moral imbecility.” Candace Owens attacked TPUSA’s leadership directly. Influencers who had spent years training their fire on Democrats were now, per Axios, “attacking each other with a fury normally reserved for the left,” feuding over Israel, Qatar, antisemitism, and who owned rights to Kirk’s donor network and brand.
Erika Kirk has become the object of scorn and conspiracy theories from being a Mossad agent, a child trafficker and to having an affair with Vice President JD Vance.
The MAGA hoardes will believe a lie, any lie as long as its told to them consistently. Just lie to them over and over and over and the game can continue regardless of how egregious the corruption, ridiculous the policy or hypocritical the change of values they’re required to make. Just tell me the lie to believe.
But without Charlie there was no discipline. No structure. No hierarchy. And all the lies were no longer equal.
Here’s what that tells you. The moment the money man died, everybody rushed to grab the money. Not the ideas. Not the principles. The revenue streams and the platform reach. That’s not what a movement with ideological conviction looks like. That’s not what happens to an organization with principles or values. That’s what a protection racket looks like when the boss goes down.
Where the MAGA true-believers have turned into the British red coats warring against the pillars of freedom and Constitutionalism, the right wing influencers are now the German Hessians fighting for nothing more than money.
Patriots indeed.
If conservatism under Trump had a genuine intellectual foundation, Kirk’s death would have produced a battle of ideas about how to advance it. What it produced instead was a personality brawl between social media operators competing for audience share and donor access. The battlefield wasn’t ideology. It was reach. Followers. Influence. Monetization. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
See the pattern?
The base these influencers spent years cultivating was primed for exactly this outcome. An audience fed on grievance and tribal loyalty has no independent allegiance to any idea, value or virtue. It follows whoever tells the most compelling story about who is victimizing them today. Without Kirk running traffic control, each influencer defaulted to their own version of that story, and those versions turned out to be mutually incompatible and sometimes openly hostile. Especially towards each other.
The kennel gates opened and every dog ran in its own direction. That’s not a movement. That’s a business model that lost its franchise agreement.
As the firehose of misinformation and attack turned the cannons inside its own castle walls, the Trump presidency began to spiral. A weak and unmoored foreign policy saw our allies turn on us and witness Canada declare the era of global US hegemony was over. The dollar index showed a ten percent decline from the one year mark of when Trump took office. The debt has exploded with few ways left for the White House to refinance it as confidence in the dollar collapses. Trump threatens Greenland, invades Venezuela and rattles the saber at the NATO alliance. Masked Jack-booted thugs kill US citizens during a reign of terror on our streets. Gold and silver prices explode as the full faith and credit of the United States evaporates.
Freed from disciplined attack Republican members of Congress were emboldened to finally say what every rational person knows: The emperor has no clothes. Marjory Taylor Greene. Lauren Boebert. Thomas Massie. Rand Paul. Kevin Kiley. The entire House GOP conference on the Epstein files. Eight GOP Senators who have had enough with ICE thugs violating the Constitution.
Meanwhile the numbers confirm the rot: Trump at 36% approval, a 23-point swing away from non-college voters since Election Day, Democrats leading the generic ballot by 14 points, European allies agreeing the era of American dominance is over and building military infrastructure to prove it. The EU and India ink a free trade agreement stalled after twenty years, motivated by Trumps erratic tariff policies.
No Charlie Kirk couldn’t have controlled the disaster that the Trump administration has devolved into, but he could have harnessed the message machine. Without direction MAGA heads over a cliff. The sheep need a shepherd. But Charlie’s dead and the discipline required to keep the red hatted vultures at bay are gone with him.
Charlie Kirk didn’t die and take MAGA with him. He died and took the curtain with him. He didn’t just pull it back he took the whole thing.
What’s behind it is what was always behind it.
A lie.
And oh yeah…The Epstein files.

I think this is the best article you have written. Its about the grift. I was a Republican at one point for principle reasons its crystal clear why l washed out. There is no place in the GOP for those with convictions.
