Didn’t we have presidential elections during WW1 , WW2 and The Civil War? I believe the US president has no legal control over US elections. We need to keep reenforcing that and stop normalizing that he will stay in office. Of course he wants to stay but we must keep emphasizing that we need to prevent that from happening.

Trump and his regime will bankrupt our country as he’s done throughout Trump’s life.

He already has bankrupted the country. We’re insolvent now. We’re becoming one more of those third world “s—-hole” countries thanks to him.

I understand your concerns about Trump not wanting to leave. But you have to consider a few things. Let me add to this discussion:

First of, let's consider everything that was said in the first half of this discussion. What they are doing is not popular. They are becoming even more unpopular. Their base of support is going to Balkanize sooner or later. How can you maintain yourself in power in these conditions? You can't hang on if 70% of the public is against you. And their opposition is only going to harden as 2028 approaches.

Also, consider the legality of it. Trump's second term is going to end in January 2029. The constitution explicitly bars him from serving a third term. And I mean explicitly. "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice...". There is not buts or ifs. No extensions of presidential terms. Once you are elected twice, that's it. You can't serve any more than 8 years. There is no legal mechanism for him to perpetuate himself in power any longer than that.

So what about illegal methods, like a coup. Well, who's going to take part in it? Trump, of course, his sycophants, but who else? His base like you said is balkanizing, those who are turning against him are not suddenly going to jump back into the ship. He's losing control of that. And let's remember that a coup needs some sort of popular support. How sucessful can a coup be when 70% of a nation vehemently hates you?

The armed forces? Are they going to join, or at least join in sufficient numbers? The higher ups are not big Trump supporters. Very many of them were upset over that meeting were they qere all summoned, even those who where on the other side of the world, just to listen to Hegseth whine about "warrior ethos". They are not impressed by these edgelord wannabes. And their power, authority and privileges are drawn from the legal status quo in place. If the Constitution is abolished, what happens to them? They are not the ones holding any power, now it's only Trump, who can promote whoever he wishes and remove whoever he hates without worry about legality or peocedure. He could also kill any of these higher ups if he so wishes. And Trump has made it well known he hates these higher ups. Are they going to join him in a coup?

SCOTUS? You may be forgiven in thinking they will back him on his shenanigans fur to the immunity decision, but you forget something: Their power is drawn entirely by the Constitution. As long as that document is in effect, so is their power. If they undermined the constitution, it gives possibility for anyone to undermine their power. It would make them void and null. The immunity decision had constitutional logic to it. Of course the standard they came up with was garbage, but the logic was there. There's no such thing for extending Trump's term or canceling elections. Are they going to void their own power?

Using the Iran War to cancel elections? How? The US doesn't have any legal mechanisms to do that. "But Ukraine did it". That's because the Ukrainian constitution has such mechanisms in place for such an emergency. There are none in the US Constitution. And the US has a very strong precedent about doing elections even in war time. During the Civil War, there were both a midterm and a presidential election. Lincoln was someone who wasn't afraid to bend the rules, like what he did with habeas corpus, you think he didn't think about pospoting elections? He couldn't get around them. Also, before the Civil War, there were elections in 1814 as per usual, even as the British were burning down the White House. Despite these two dire situations in the homeland elections were held like normal. You're going to tell me there is a legal case to upend them over a war that is taking place half a world away?

That doesn't mean he won't try to do some shenanigans (to put it lightly). But it is extremely doubtful they will succeed, not because of some make-wish belief that things will turn out fine, but because there is so much opposition, by people, insitutional power and precedent, against any such actions.

Good discussion, Mike and Waj.
