Despite the Presidents claims about his being targeted for his accomplishments - it is far more likely he is being targeted for the the divisions in our country he seeks
I hope one day my grandchildren will live in the harmonious in between time. Until then I will stand and do my part to try to get us there. Thank you for this piece.
Appreciate your POV/insights on where we are as a country at this moment in time. I am halfway through "The Age of Acrimony" on audio. This is reminder to get back into it.
greatness, Trump might do well to remember that in Germany today there is a monument to Georg Elser, the man who tried to assassinate Hitler, but failed. And no monuments for Hitler himself.
The arc of the moral is long, and it bends towards justice — not greatness.
Mike, I usually find some comfort when you put events in their historical context, but it's not very heartening to see how long the first Age of Acrimony lasted.
Last night after Trump's speech, a I noted to a friend that it might not have been Trump the gunman was after. How about Hegseth, who certainly deserves much of the credit for botching this war? Or Markwayne and Kash, each execrable in their own way. Or the unbearable JD. That would be a blow to Trump's ego, I concluded.
I may be psychic! Because today, the NYT reported that the gunman's note does not mention Trump by name, but rather expresses outrage against the whole administration. I hope Trump fires his Cabinet in a fit of pique.
Lord, the man is just a magnet for the worst people -- and we pay the price.
I’ve enjoyed reading Age of Acrimony. It is comforting that we can see history rhyming. Makes us feel a little less lost. Thank you for this insightful perspective on last night’s violence.
And with online MAGA already calling to go after "the left" for this lone wolf act, it is exactly why I am not feeling so bad for Trump even after such a vile act of violence. Because in the days to come, he will use this shooting like he did with Charlie Kirk's death to crack down on political dissent and opposition through NSPM-7.
Not to condone the shooter's acts either-the least of which because I want Trump to be alive long enough to be held accountable to the law and to the voters in his presidency and post-presidency. I want Trump to have a long-lived life for sure.
When it seems like there is no stopping him with his bad (and getting worse) decisions and no movement in sight to remove him and his Raidy Bunch of cohorts in destructive government, it is astounding that this is only the third time such theatrics have taken place. As he nears the next disasters of decisions, will others need to do even more to stop him? Impeachment or removal from office by responsible people IS an alternative. Oops... nobody like that is currently serving at the pleasure of the Resident.
Deja-Vu all over again. Spot On examination of where we are today, relative to our past. Yes, it does sound familiar. Thank you, Mike Madrid.
No one should be subject to violence for their politics. However, it is difficult to have sympathy for the predicament that the most divisive President in history, is in. His attacks upon any opposition, including former supporters, are clear, blatant and immature. Many kiss his ass out of fear.
His extreme selfishness makes him unable to recognize the reality around him. His desire is to always be the center of the universe, the star of the show.
He is incapable of real leadership, that which inspires unity in all, whether in good times or bad.
The extreme partisanship at high levels, has been growing for decades, effectively destroying our ability/desire to respectfully agree to disagree. Far too many view their politics like some sort of game...us vs them..."just win baby".
We really need to get back to some sort of normalcy. Trump is incapable of leading the way. The presidency is a hard job and he’s lazy. Creating chaos and division is the only thing he is good at (and making money from his corrupt ways, of course).
Oh boy, another book I need to read. A 2023 book I found transformative is Peter Turchin's "End Times: Elites, counter-elites, and the path of political disintegration." His research is across centuries and cultures, finding a pattern of excessive elite enrichment, corresponding impoverishment of way too many others, and destruction ensues. The remedy he suggests -the only hope--is for the uber-rich to share more. Nick Hanauer addressed this *years* ago and the hoarding of wealth has only accelerated.
Well said, so noted!

We’ve got to win the Midterms.
The naïveté, the outrage, the comments from some journalists present at the event?
It’s like they think they live in a country where they’re immune to gun violence.
Thanks for the reminder that the U.S. has been, and remains, the land of the gun.

One thing... Melissa Hortman was assassinated. Charlie Kirk, who was not a political office holder, was murdered.
Non office holders can be assasinated.

He’s got a drunken tiny dancer and a plumbers assistant on the job. We should feel better already.
